Hello from the trenches of newborn parenthood! It's been a while...
Baby 2 arrived safe and sound on her due date and we are all loving getting to know her! Mom, Dad and big brother are adjusting to having another little one in the house and baby is growing like mad!
If you've missed me you can catch me this coming Friday teaching a yoga nidra at The Castle on First. This seasonally themed class will be by donation and it part of the Castle 12 Days of Christmas event which has proceeds going to the Fernie Women's Resource Center. Class is from 7:15-8:15pm - please bring anything extra you like for your nidra session- we have bolsters, blankets, mats and eye pillows at the studio.
In January I'll be back all month at The Castle with some Yoga Nidra. You can also catch me on weekends at the King Fir Lodge. Please check the schedule there as classes are subject to change.
I'm also super exited to announce that I am now a brand ambassador for Flow Yoga Mats. This company donates a portion of each mat sold to educate children in India. Check out their website for a special free shipping code and to sign up to receive notification of when their product goes live for orders in the New Year.
I'll be sending out a newsletter with more updates soon. Until then I'm wishing you very Happy Holidays and a Joyful New Year!

In Due Time

I have had a trying few weeks. It can be hard when things don't quite go how you imagine not to get caught up in that "why?" feeling. I caught myself going there a few times. Particularly a few weeks ago when my son got sick and I wasn't getting much sleep. I'd been having a lot of prelabour and so the timing seemed terrible. I needed rest. It seemed as though baby was coming any day. And then the inevitable happened: I too got sick. And my prelabour symptoms ground to a halt. With two of us ill all the things I've been trying to finish up fell aside as well. I caught myself lamenting things undone. I found myself floating in a mental sea of "what ifs."
The thing is, life happens. And if we are stuck mentally looking at the negatives, life doesn't stop for it. It keeps on passing by. And we miss it. We miss the good. I found myself on my mat this week, a bit emotional, still feeling a bit blue, and at some point I paused in thunderbolt pose and rested my hands on my belly. And I realized while I was busy creating a big deal out of what I wasn't doing and wondering when I was going to start feeling like my body was progressing toward labour again that I was pilfering away at the last few days or weeks of my pregnancy. That the chances to enjoy baby all to myself, that selfish but wonderful truth that all moms realize they feel once baby is out in the world and no longer solely theirs to carry and connect with, were passing me by. I realized I was missing the big picture while focusing on a very very small and distorted part of it.
And I stopped. I took a breath. And I found my footing again.

Crazy Yoga Momma Goodness

Okay. So I may have made a bad habit of over scheduling myself this pregnancy. Just a bit. Like I'm teaching a retreat this weekend, at nine months pregnant, over scheduled. But I am SO excited about everything happening with yoga right now - between classes at The Castle, growing class attendance and offerings at The Women's Resource Center, and the anticipation of sharing an entire weekend with yogis gathered from BC to Saskatchewan at Soul Soothe this weekend I am feeling the yoga teacher love! It *almost* makes me wish that I wasn't about to meet my new bambino in the next four weeks or so. Almost but not quite!

Speaking of Soul Soothe - there are a few spots remaining and if really love to fill them up and add to the diversity of our group! The weekend is based around the participants self-expression and exploration, which we'll be making time for after each practice. All of the activities, from hiking, to yoga nidra, to meditation are planned with supporting this inner exploration in mind. And it's killer pricing at only $200 with shared accommodation (non-accommodation pricing is just $90!) Contact me to register!

Ok. My little is napping and this momma still has lesson planning to do for the weekend. 😘

Elkford Classes

I have two classes scheduled for Saturday September 19th in Elkford - Yoga Nidra Mini Workshop and Gentle Flow Yoga for Every Body. You can choose to attend one class or come to both for a special price. See the events page for full details.

Pre and Postnatal at The Castle

Before taking some time off in anticipation of baby's arrival, I'll be finishing up with two classes at the Castle. Both will be available for use with regular passes (on sale this Saturday at The Castle - stop by for the best deal on your yoga time) and will be followed up by class offerings from the amazing Nancy Kettering starting immediately after my sessions end.

Baby Break

I'll be taking a few months off of teaching to prepare for baby and to spend time with him or her and my family from October - December. You'll find me back at The Castle in January starting off with Yoga Nidra at the beginning of the month. Check out
The Castle's online schedule for full details. I've also been cooking up an amazing new course line up and a new teaching opportunity that I'll be sharing with you in the months to come!

Hello Yogis! Here's what's new in August and what's coming up in the Fall.

Starting on August 19th I'll be teaching a mommas only postnatal series at The Castle on 1st. This seven class series will run every Wednesday night from 7:30-8:30pm. Enroll in the entire series for $70, or buy a pre/post natal 5- class pass for $55 to drop in (provided that there is room in the series to do so). We are only a few spots away from having enough people to run this series - if you are interested register today to ensure your spot.

The end of August marks the end of outdoor prenatal by donation. Starting on September 3rd I'll be offering a six class series in the Moon Studio at The Castle on 1st. 7:30-8:30pm. $55 to enroll in the series. This class will not run without minimum enrollment - register early to ensure your spot.

If you are interested in an earlier time for prenatal or a mom and baby postnatal, email me here with your information and which class you are interested in seeing run. If there is enough interest I will add to the Fall schedule, or slate a new session for January.

A reminder that the newest addition to our family is due in early November. I will be taking a break from teaching from mid-October through December but will be back with prenatal and yoga nidra offerings in January and a postnatal series beginning in February. For my prenatal mommas - The Castle has you covered with instructors for new prenatal series' from mid-October through December. Dates, times, teacher(s) and registration info TBA on The Castle on 1st website.

New this Fall is my newsletter! If you haven't given me permission to email you (on your waiver) and would like to be included in mailings (once a month or less) then please use the contact form on this site to send me your information and your permission to email so that I can add you to the mailing list.

I have had to cancel the Renew Your Soul retreat through FWA for October due to scheduling difficulties. If you are interested in coming to do yoga that weekend I am working on an alternative semi-retreat. It will run Saturday and Sunday October 3rd and 4th. This weekend will include yoga classes, discussions, access to a gorgeous outdoor pool and hot tub and hiking. Meals will not be included in the package pricing but there will be accommodation available (optional). Pricing, schedule and details will be available on the website - or you can email me for more information.

Yoga Selfies? I Think So!

7/26/2015

I'm not a die hard Instagramer. There are times where you won't see a post from me for weeks, or even months. My pictures aren't all yoga pictures, and I rarely have time to post a nice, long, inspiring message with every photo. But I am a proponent of yogis using Instagram if it serves them. In fact, I think all of the controversy over yoga selfies simply boils down to judgement and closed-mindedness. Yep, I said it.
The first time I discovered that people posted yoga selfies to Instagram, I had no clue how on earth they even did it. You can read my blog post about thishere.  Shortly after discovering the world of Instagram yoga, I discovered the world of Instagram yoga challenges. This was during a busy and somewhat stressful time in my life, and I decided to give participating in a challenge a shot. It seemed like a good way to ensure I got in even just a short practice every day, and gave me an excuse to take a break from everything else that was going on.
The challenge gave me a few things that I wasn't expecting too. For one, it opened my eyes to an entire community of yogis I had no idea existed. They gather from all over the world on Instagram and they share their thoughts, ideas, practices, small businesses and sometimes even the stories of their lives. They connect to each other from far and near and offer support to each other. Many of them are stay at home moms who are self-taught yogis with home practices looking for a community to share their journey with. They are beautiful. They ARE inspiring. And for most, the inspiration they offer has precious little to do with the fancy poses or unattainable body types I see brought up so often in criticisms of "Instagram yoga."
The other discovery I happily made was that participating in a yoga challenge helped to do more than get me on my mat everyday. It challenged me to try new poses (some of which I'd never seen). It took me out of my comfort zone and inspired me. It was about WAY more than the vanity of selfie taking it gets boiled down to so often. It did help me to grow my practice and I often found myself frankly writing about how many tries it took to get an actual picture of a posture or sharing a picture that was not a "perfect" expression of the posture. I found it a good tool for breaking through ego - not a way to serve or feed it.
At the beginning of July, feeling a bit stagnant in my practice and wanting to keep inspired, I joined another challenge. This one simply gives you a word and you choose the posture that it inspires you to share. It has been a great way for this pregnant yogi-momma to keep up with her prenatal practice. It won't be the last time I turn to this online community to enrich and inspire my practice. Accuse me of vanity all day long. I'll just be over on my IG account with people too busy walking their own yogic path to be casting judgement on what, where or how others choose to carry on with their practices.

Happy Summer yogis! Here's what's happening with yoga for the summer!

We will have a special guest speaker at prenatal on Thursday July 30 sharing her experience with using yoga and pranayama in labour. All are welcome to stay after class and enjoy the talk.

Due to an interest in one on one sessions/talking more in depth about yoga techniques for labour, I'm offering a private lesson special from now-September. Book a 45 minute prenatal private for $55 or book three 45minute sessions for $150. Email me to book or for more information!

Postnatal yoga will begin in August running through September. Dates and times TBA - watch the schedule page.

Elkford yogis - I'll be coming with another teacher to offer you a 3 hour workshop on Yoga for Body Image in September. Check your inboxes/watch the events page for details.

Need some TLC? The October retreat details will be up by next week. Save the weekend of October 2-4 for some you time in the rustic Fernie Wilderness Adventures Lodge!

I have the opportunity to delve into pre and post natal studies a bit deeper with Mamata Yoga's online course this summer. An opportunity I am very grateful for! Check out their blog for some great insights and birth stories!
